Greetings from the Chairman

구삼열 위원장 사진

Improvements in nation branding begin today.

The Korean Wave took over the world in October 2012, with achievements we never imagined before being realized, raising South Korea’s position on the global stage to new heights.

South Korea’s economy is the thirteenth most powerful in the world, this amazing feat having been accomplished in merely half a century. Ours is a country that shifted position from being a country that received aid, to one that provides. We also proudly hosted the 2010 G20 Summit and the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit.

Jejudo (island), Changdeokkung (palace), Bulguksa (temple), Seokguram Grotto, Hahoe Folk Village, and the Tripitaka Koreana have all been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Korean cuisine has captured the world, and Korean artists have and continue to gain global recognition. Many eyes are on our beautiful nature, art, and culture, and this makes us proud.

However this is not a time to rest on our laurels. Continuous effort is a must, to devise effective and efficient strategies to spread our culture even further.

It has already been four years since the establishment of the Presidential Council on Nation Branding.

The Council has been promoting cultural exchange with various countries by hosting Korea-Week in countries such as Indonesia, Kazakhstan, China, and France. It also spreads knowledge of South Korea’s representative cultural contents through social network channels and e-book services (Story of Korea). In addition, through nation branding conventions, UCC contests, “brand communicators,” and other diverse national and international activities, we work to encourage citizen participation in nation branding.

The Presidential Council on Nation Branding will work continuously with the people of South Korea so that our nation can truly become one of the most important leading countries in the world.

This is an investment for our future.
